In September 2012 Russia led the world in crude oil production. An increase in associated petroleum gas flaring become one of the consequences of such leadership. Since 2010 the volume of the flared gas has grown from 15.5 billion m3 to 17.1 billion m3 at year-end 2012.
This growth took place despite all measures of coercion on the part of governmental authorities and increasing investments by Russian petroleum companies on projects for APG utilization.
Conventional technologies allow almost full utilization of crude hydrocarbons including associated petroleum gas. However the increase in the flared gas volumes in Russia, the United States and other countries is due to the lack of cost-effective technologies for processing small and medium gas volumes into merchantable and transportable products.
Our company, Gazohim Techno, offers the industry the innovative Mini-GTLTM technology, which is effective for yearly processing of associated petroleum gas volumes between 10 million m3 to 200 million m3.
Conventional technologies for obtaining liquid hydrocarbons from natural gas and associated petroleum gas are only cost-effective when processing gas in large scales - from 500 million m3 and more. Thanks to а series of technical and process innovations and inventions Russian, English and American scientists have managed to drastically intensify process procedures, reduce processing plant size significantly, and to enable revolutionary technical-and-economic capabilities of gas-to-liquid technologies.
Mini-GTLTM plant is based on two key process design solutions:
- Production of synthesis gas by partial oxidation of feed gas. The technology was developed by Gazohim Techno company (Russian Federation).
- Production of synthetic liquid hydrocarbons using Fischer-Tropsch method of synthesis gas conversion with the use of a proprietary microchannel reactor. This technology was developed in the US.
Both technological processes are combined into containerized process modules.
The minimum capacity of the process module is of 10 million m3 of feed gas. The yield of synthetic liquid hydrocarbons is in the range from 3500 to 5500 tons a year. The yield depends upon the composition of associated petroleum gas and the operational mode of the plant.
Throughput performance can be scaled up by the parallel connection of a few additional modules. For example, to process 200 million m3 of gas per year it is necessary to operate 20 process modules.
With the except of the proprietary synthesis gas and Fischer-Tropsch synthesis reactors all the other equipment is commercially available and can be delivered in a block-modular format.
The return on investments of mineral resource users in the mini-GTL plants is achieved due to producing a single-product – “synthetic oil”, which is mixed with conventional mineral oil. According to the research of «LUKOIL‑Nizhegorodniinefteproekt» company a mixture of synthetic oil (up to 10%) and mineral oil can be transported by all kinds of transport, including pipeline transportation.
Depending on the gas resource the increase in productivity due to the production of synthetic oil would be between 3 to 7% whilst simultaneous eliminating of penalties for APG flaring.
